LAHORE: An important seminar was organized by the People's Study Circle Committee of Central Punjab to commemorate the 23rd death anniversary of Sheikh Rashid, known as the Father of Socialism. The ceremony was chaired by senior journalist Hussain Naqvi, while the special guest was Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad, In-charge of People's Labour Bureau. Dr. Zarrar Yousaf performed the duties of moderator.

The event was attended by several prominent personalities including Senior Vice President Rana Farooq Saeed, Shahzad Saeed Cheema, Raza Ishfaq, Chaudhry Akhtar Chhokar, Tariq Khurshid, Chaudhry Javed Akhtar, Dr. Khalid Javed Jan, Abid Saqi, actor Ghulam Mohiuddin, Barrister Amir and Khalid Baloch, Sardar Asif Ali, Amir Nasir Butt, Bushra Manzoor Manika, Shahida Jabeen, Imran Athwal, Arif Khan, Naseer Ahmad, and Tahir Ghalib.

Messages from former Provincial Health Minister Badruddin Chaudhry, Farrukh Sohail Goindi, and Bashir Chand were also read during the seminar.

In his address, Chaudhry Manzoor Ahmad stated that when the People's Party was founded, many left-wing groups and parties joined it. He emphasized that people come to traditional workers' parties based on popular movements.

He revealed that during Chairman Bilawal Bhutto's visit to Kasur, the administration did not want him to meet with farmers. The farmers of Kasur demanded from Bilawal Bhutto that free fertilizer and seeds should be provided, money should be given for house construction, and electricity bills should be waived.

Chaudhry Manzoor stressed that the People's Party still remains the party of the country's laborers, youth, farmers, and workers. He stated that the ruling elite wants to erase every memory of Bhutto.

Commenting on current conditions, Chaudhry Manzoor said that the government has not been able to provide relief to flood victims even after rescuing them. He mentioned that wheat prices have reached 3,500 rupees per maund and Punjab is experiencing the largest flood in its history.

Regarding climate change, he noted that Pakistan currently ranks first among countries affected by climate change. He argued that those who have damaged the climate through climate change should bear its consequences.

In his presidential address, senior journalist Hussain Naqvi questioned why the people are called the source of power but actually are not. He raised the question of why decision-making today is done by the establishment.

He stated that there is only one reason for this situation: no political party in Pakistan has been formed democratically. If the People's Party wants to revive in Punjab, it should start membership drives and organize from the grassroots to the top level.

Raza Ishfaq, grandson of Sheikh Rashid, said that he is a born worker of the People's Party. He revealed that during Zia's era, he organized the People's Students Federation in Lahore.

He stated that Sheikh Rashid struggled against feudalism, capitalism, and American imperialism. The Father of Socialism was the same person both in public and in private.

Various suggestions were presented in the seminar for the revival of the People's Party, including the formation of a steering committee to launch a new membership campaign in Punjab, organizing Benazir Sufi festivals in Punjab's 128 tehsils, creating an autonomous narrative for the revival of People's Party Punjab, strengthening all institutions instead of just one, and implementing the 1973 Constitution.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, speakers stated that Pakistan today needs a committed leader like Sheikh Rashid. Sheikh Rashid had given Zulfikar Ali Bhutto the title of Quaid-e-Awam (Leader of the People).

Tariq Khurshid, Javed Akhtar, Abid Saqi, Mushtaq Lashari, Ghulam Mohiuddin, Ammar Shah Punjabi, Wajid Shah, Barrister Adnan, and Shahida also addressed the seminar.
