Thailand Takes Center Stage in Asia-Pacific Media Leadership
PRD Director-General Elected President of AIBD General Conference 2025

PHUKET, Thailand — Thailand has secured a landmark role in the Asia-Pacific media landscape as the Government Public Relations Department (PRD) was elected President of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development General Conference (AIBD GC) for the 2025–2027 term.
The election, held during the 23rd Annual General Conference of AIBD in Phuket from August 19–21, 2025, saw PRD Director-General Sudruetai Lertkesom chosen by consensus of member countries to serve as the new President of the organization’s highest decision-making body.
The event brought together more than 87 representatives of national broadcasters, media agencies, and government officials from across the Asia-Pacific region under the theme “Media for People, Peace, and Prosperity.” The discussions centered on how broadcasting can adapt to the rapid technological shifts driven by artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and the growing need to counter misinformation.
Delivering a virtual welcome, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Jiraporn Sindhuprai praised the international community’s confidence in Thailand’s media sector.
“I am deeply pleased that AIBD has chosen Thailand as the host for this momentous conference,” she said, underscoring Phuket’s status as a globally recognized cultural and tourism hub.
“It is truly gratifying to see international media recognizing the important role of Thai media. The election of Thailand to this position reflects trust in our commitment to responsible and modern broadcasting.”
The Minister also highlighted how the conference’s theme aligns with Thailand’s broader vision of harnessing media to empower citizens, nurture peace, and foster shared prosperity. She urged the PRD to champion responsible communication practices, particularly by leveraging emerging technologies, AI-driven tools, and fact-based journalism to combat disinformation that undermines public trust worldwide.
In her first remarks as AIBD GC President, Sudruetai Lertkesom pledged to strengthen collaboration among member nations. She emphasized how effective communication plays a pivotal role in crisis response, citing Thailand’s recent disaster management efforts during earthquake and flood emergencies as examples of media’s humanitarian impact.
The three-day gathering also reviewed AIBD’s operational reports, capacity-building programs, and strategic partnerships. Delegates worked on shaping the organization’s Strategic Plan 2025–2029, which includes enhancing regional cooperation, promoting ethical journalism, and integrating cutting-edge technologies into public service broadcasting.
Thailand’s election to this prestigious position represents not only a national achievement but also growing recognition of its role as a leader in shaping the future of media in the Asia-Pacific region.
