BANGKOK, August 12 — Thailand today celebrates the 93rd birthday anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, widely revered as the “Mother of the Thai Nation.” Each year, the Thai people commemorate this auspicious occasion with nationwide events and expressions of gratitude for Her Majesty’s lifelong dedication to the Kingdom.
Born in 1932 as M.R. Sirikit Kitiyakara, the eldest daughter of Prince Nakkhatra Mangala and M.L. Bua Kitiyakara, Her Majesty’s early years coincided with a historic shift in Thailand’s governance following the coup of June 24, 1932, which transformed the nation from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy. Her father’s diplomatic postings took the family overseas, where the young Sirikit received an international education, studying art, languages, history, literature, and music.
While abroad, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great (Rama IX) became engaged to M.R. Sirikit. The royal wedding took place in Bangkok on April 28, 1950, shortly before His Majesty’s coronation on May 5, when she was elevated to the full rank of Queen.
Throughout her reign as Queen, and later as Queen Mother, Her Majesty worked alongside King Bhumibol in championing the welfare of the Thai people. She spearheaded numerous initiatives to improve livelihoods, provide occupational skills, and preserve the Kingdom’s arts, culture, and environment. Her commitment extended to countless royally initiated projects, benefiting men, women, and children across Thailand.
Her Majesty’s tireless efforts, personal contributions, and compassionate leadership have earned her the enduring love and respect of the Thai nation. On this National Mother’s Day, the people of Thailand join together to honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother for her lifetime of service and devotion.
