Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost Elected as First American Pope, Takes Name Leo XIV

In a historic moment for the Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the United States has been elected as the new Pope, becoming the first American to hold the position. The 69-year-old will be known as Leo XIV, the 267th successor to the throne of St. Peter. His election marks a significant milestone in the Church’s history, breaking centuries of tradition where the papacy had been held exclusively by European and, more recently, Latin American leaders.

The announcement came after more than 100 cardinals gathered in a secret conclave at the Vatican, following the passing of Pope Francis in April. After two days of deliberation, white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, signaling that a new pontiff had been chosen. Even before his name was officially declared, crowds in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers, chanting *“Viva il Papa!”*—Long live the Pope.

In his first address as pontiff, Leo XIV emphasized unity and inclusivity, urging the Church to “build bridges” and “welcome everyone.” His words resonated with many, reflecting his extensive pastoral experience across different cultures. Though he is the first U.S.-born pope, his deep ties to Latin America have also shaped his spiritual journey.

Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage, Prevost began his religious path as an altar boy before being ordained as a priest in 1982. Three years later, he moved to Peru as a missionary, where he later became a bishop. Despite his long service in Latin America, he maintained strong connections to the U.S., frequently returning to serve as a pastor and prior in his hometown.

The election of Pope Leo XIV signals a new chapter for the Catholic Church, blending diverse cultural influences and reinforcing its global mission. As the faithful worldwide celebrate this historic appointment, all eyes will now be on how his leadership shapes the future of the Church.
