PPP Reaffirms Commitment to Constitutional Democracy as 27th Amendment Deliberations Continue
Pakistan Peoples Party Stresses Need for Broad Consensus on Proposed Constitutional Amendment
LAHORE: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has reiterated its steadfast commitment to constitutional democracy and the protection of fundamental rights as deliberations continue over the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Syed Hassan Murtaza, General Secretary of the Pakistan Peoples Party Central Punjab, emphasized that the PPP has consistently served as the vanguard of constitutional democracy in Pakistan. He reaffirmed the party's unwavering dedication to strengthening democratic institutions while ensuring that any legislative measures serve the interests of the Pakistani people.
The PPP leader stressed that his party recognizes constitutional amendments as significant undertakings that demand careful consideration, broad-based consensus, and thorough parliamentary debate. He noted that the party, which was founded by Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and led through countless struggles by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, has always maintained that the Constitution belongs to the people and must reflect their aspirations for justice, equality, and democratic governance.
Murtaza stated that the PPP is examining the proposed amendment with the seriousness it deserves and is actively engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that it upholds the principles of the 1973 Constitution.
He stressed that any constitutional reform must strengthen the judiciary's independence, protect the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, and enhance the system of checks and balances that are essential to democratic governance.
The General Secretary clarified that the PPP's position has remained clear and consistent throughout its history. The party supports constitutional measures that promote federalism, protect provincial autonomy, and ensure the separation of powers among the three pillars of the state. He pledged that the party would continue to advocate for reforms that serve the common people of Punjab and Pakistan as a whole.
Looking ahead to parliamentary deliberations, Murtaza assured that the Pakistan Peoples Party remains committed to constructive dialogue with all political forces. He expressed his belief that national consensus on constitutional matters is essential for political stability and democratic continuity in the country.
The PPP leader concluded by stating that his party would play its responsible role in ensuring that any amendment reflects the democratic will of the people and strengthens Pakistan's constitutional framework.
Meanwhile, Ahsan Rizvi, a member of the PPP Central Punjab Executive, credited his party for conducting extensive internal discussions on the proposed amendment. He highlighted that hours-long sessions were held during the two-day Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting, with every member participating in detailed and open discussions on issues ranging from Article 243 to dual nationality.
Rizvi emphasized that there was adequate debate within the PPP on the proposed changes, adding that rushed legislation often creates unnecessary public suspicion.
"If law-making is done in a hurry, the public becomes suspicious for no reason," Rizvi said.
