In the Spirit of Karbala Lahore’s Christian Community Leads by Example
Christian-Muslim Unity on Display at Muharram Sabeel in Lahore

On July 3rd, 2025, a deeply moving example of interfaith harmony unfolded at 31 Empress Road in Lahore, where the Christian community organized a Sabeel (water distribution point) on the 7th of Muharram to honor the great sacrifice of Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions. The initiative, led by Sohail Alam, a member of the Minority Advisory Council to the Government of Punjab, was not only an act of service but a heartfelt gesture of solidarity and respect toward the Muslim community.
Throughout the day, hundreds of people — local residents, passersby, and visitors — stopped at the Sabeel to drink water and express their appreciation for the thoughtful initiative. While Muharram is a sacred time of mourning for Muslims, this act by the Christian community offered a profound reminder that values such as justice, sacrifice, and compassion transcend religious boundaries.
The Sabeel was much more than a traditional act of charity — it was a symbolic message of unity and peace. It reflected the shared human values that bring communities together in times of remembrance and spiritual reflection. The initiative was widely appreciated by those who witnessed it, many of whom praised the sense of brotherhood and national unity it fostered.
The event was further dignified by the presence of esteemed Muslim religious scholars and leaders, whose participation added great meaning to the occasion. Among those in attendance were Maulana Muhammad Asim Makhdoom, Chairman of the Kul Maslik Ulema Board; Mufti Syed Ashiq Hussain of Jamia Bait-ul-Quran; Allama Asghar Arif Chishti, Chairman of the Sunni Ulema Forum Pakistan; and Ali Shah, Vice Chairman of the Shia-Sunni Peace Committee at Bibi Pakdaman, Lahore. These prominent figures commended the Christian community for their gesture, expressing admiration for the way they honored the memory of Karbala and supported interfaith understanding.
Many attendees described the event as uplifting and inspirational, noting how simple acts like this can build bridges between communities. By choosing to commemorate the legacy of Imam Hussain (A.S.) in this way, the Christian community demonstrated a commitment to unity, peace, and mutual respect that deeply resonated with all who were present.
The Sabeel served as a reminder that Pakistan’s strength lies in its diversity, and its future in the hands of those who choose compassion over division. In a time where global narratives often focus on differences, this event quietly but powerfully affirmed what is possible when people of different faiths come together with shared respect and humanity.
