Lahore, May 4: Senior Minister Punjab, Maryam Aurangzeb, stated that on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, students are now actively participating in efforts to combat smog and air pollution. Initiatives are underway to make every student as an Environment Ambassador.
The Forest Department has successfully provided over 1 million quality saplings free of cost to educational institutions across Punjab. Additionally, new curriculum content is being introduced to raise awareness about environmental protection, forest and wildlife conservation, and the restoration of natural ecosystems.
Alongside plantation drives, environmental awareness sessions and seminars are being held successfully in educational institutions. The Forest Department's transparent afforestation target plan is actively in progress, with digital monitoring systems implemented to track district-wise plantation goals. Performance reports have also been called for.
Under the Punjab Government’s eco-friendly policies, tree plantation has been made mandatory in all government departments. The ongoing plantation campaign will enhance greenery in public spaces, green belts, and school grounds.
Maryam Aurangzeb emphasized, “A Green Punjab is not just a dream; it is the core pillar of our policy. Student involvement in plantation is a practical step toward environmental protection.” She praised the growing enthusiasm of students participating in voluntary plantation activities in schools, colleges, and universities.
She further stated that improving the environment requires the collective involvement of students, teachers, communities, and the younger generation. “Youth must play their role in protecting trees, which are a national asset,” she said.
The Senior Minister highlighted that planting a tree is a one-day act, but its benefits last for generations. Therefore, parents and teachers must ensure that each child plants a tree and is trained to care for it. The province’s tree plantation drive is being aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
