Dr Ayesha Shaukat appointed as General Secretary Lahore
LAHORE - KARACHI: Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has made several key appointments to strengthen the party's organizational structure in Lahore. In a significant reshuffle, Faisal Mir has been appointed as President of Lahore, while Professor Dr Ayesha Shaukat will serve as General Secretary for Lahore Urban. Additionally, Rai Shahjahan Bhatti has been designated as President for the rural division, with Chaudhry Shaheem Safdar taking on the role of General Secretary. Malik Shoaib Awan has been appointed as Secretary Information.
Faisal Mir, who is an industrialist and exporter by profession, comes from one of Pakistan's most distinguished journalistic and political families. His father, the late Professor Waris Mir, was a prominent intellectual who led a courageous literary and intellectual struggle against the oppressive laws introduced by General Zia-ul-Haq's regime. These laws had sought to disqualify Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto from participating in politics on the grounds of her gender. During his formative years in the repressive Zia era, Faisal Mir himself endured significant hardships, including false cases, arrests, and periods of imprisonment as a result of his political activism.
In recognition of his dedication to the party's cause, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto personally appointed Faisal Mir as President of the People's Students Federation at Punjab University. Beyond his political endeavors, Mir has also made notable contributions to Pakistan's business community. He served as the founding convener of the Pakistan Industrial and Traders Associations Front at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, demonstrating his commitment to representing the interests of the country's industrial and commercial sectors.
Faisal Mir's political journey has seen him contest elections at both the national and provincial levels. He ran for a National Assembly seat from Lahore, challenging Kulsoom Nawaz, who was serving as Pakistan's First Lady at the time. Furthermore, he has contested provincial assembly elections from Lahore on two separate occasions, underlining his sustained commitment to democratic politics and public service in the region.
