Reports: Blair in Talks for Key Role in US-Led Gaza Peace Plan
Blair also attended a White House meeting with Trump in August to discuss post-war governance in Gaza.
London, Sept 27 – Former British prime minister Tony Blair is being considered for a senior position in a proposed transitional authority for Gaza under US-led peace efforts, according to multiple UK media reports on Friday.
The proposal, currently under discussion with the administration of US President Donald Trump, envisions the creation of a temporary governing body for the Palestinian territory following the conflict. Reports suggest Blair could head the authority with backing from the United Nations and Gulf states.
The Financial Times said Blair has expressed interest in joining the supervisory board of the authority, while The Economist described the plan as establishing a “Gaza International Transitional Authority” with a UN mandate to serve as the supreme political and legal body for five years before transferring power to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.
The body would reportedly consist of a secretariat of up to 25 staff and a seven-member board, initially based in Egypt before relocating to Gaza once security conditions allow, the BBC reported.
Sources close to Blair confirmed he has been engaged in talks with international partners on possible frameworks for stabilizing Gaza, though they emphasized he would not support any initiative that involved the permanent displacement of Palestinians.
Blair previously served as Middle East peace envoy from 2007 to 2015 and has remained active in regional discussions through his non-profit, the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which declined to comment on the latest reports.
Former Mossad director Yossi Cohen welcomed the idea during a BBC interview, calling Blair a “wonderful person” and suggesting his leadership could bring hope for Gaza’s future.
Blair’s potential involvement, however, is likely to draw scrutiny given his role in the 2003 Iraq war, a decision later criticized by a UK inquiry for being based on flawed intelligence.
According to media reports, Blair also attended a White House meeting with Trump in August to discuss post-war governance in Gaza. Trump has previously floated controversial plans for the territory, including large-scale redevelopment projects and proposals involving population displacement.
