Bangkok — Thailand and the United States have reiterated the enduring importance of their alliance and strategic partnership, emphasizing nearly 200 years of strong bilateral relations.
Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Russ Jalichandra held talks with a visiting U.S. Congressional Delegation, which included Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas), Congresswoman Terri Sewell (D-Alabama), Congressman Richard McCormick (R-Georgia), and Congressman Suhas Subramanyam (D-Virginia), along with Tami Overby, Vice President of the U.S.-Asia Institute. The delegation visited Thailand at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. Notably, Representatives McCormick and Subramanyam are members of the U.S.-Thai Alliance Caucus in Congress.
The discussions focused on strengthening multifaceted cooperation, with a key emphasis on security collaboration, particularly in combating online scams that have caused widespread financial losses to both Thai and American citizens. The Vice Minister highlighted Thailand’s ongoing efforts against transnational crime, including addressing scam centers operating in Cambodia.
On economic matters, both sides exchanged views on U.S. trade policies and reciprocal tariffs. The U.S. delegation expressed interest in Thailand’s investment promotion policies and recognized the country’s potential as a hub for U.S. investment in the region.
Regional cooperation was also high on the agenda, with both sides reaffirming the mutual benefits of joint efforts for peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. The Thai side underscored its readiness to continue close collaboration with the U.S. at both regional and subregional levels.
The meeting also touched on Thailand’s relations with Cambodia. The Vice Minister provided updates on recent developments, stressing Cambodia’s actions that violate Thailand’s sovereignty and international law while warning of risks to ASEAN unity. Thailand reiterated its commitment to resolving the situation peacefully through bilateral mechanisms and called on the U.S., as a long-standing ally, to encourage Cambodia to honor the ceasefire and cooperate in de-escalating tensions.
Both nations reaffirmed that their strategic partnership will continue to play a vital role in advancing shared security, economic, and regional stability interests.
