KARACHI, Pakistan — In a recent address to the Sindh Provincial Assembly, Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to minority affairs, urging that the focus should extend beyond mere financial assistance to include meaningful legislation that supports the welfare of minority communities.

Naveed began his speech by highlighting that the Minority Affairs Department's role should not be limited to distributing checks for financial aid, medical assistance, or dowries. He called for a deeper investigation into legislative measures that could foster a more inclusive environment for minorities. "We need to think beyond just financial support; we must engage in creating minority-friendly legislation," he stated.

He expressed gratitude for the establishment of a Minority Caucus in the Sindh Assembly, a significant step in representing minority interests. However, he urged the government to provide an office for the Caucus chairman within the assembly to facilitate their work and ensure their voices are heard. "It is essential that they have a space to come and contribute to discussions on minority issues," Naveed remarked.

Naveed also addressed the need for a survey to assess the impact of financial assistance on minority communities, suggesting that a measurable program similar to the Benazir Income Support Program be implemented. He stressed the importance of conducting a survey to better understand the needs of minorities and to track the effectiveness of assistance programs.

Furthermore, he raised concerns about the representation of the Christian community within the 5% job quota allocated for minorities in the Sindh Public Service Commission. He pointed out that Christians are often underrepresented in job placements and called for a review of the quota system to ensure fair opportunities for all marginalized groups.

In his closing remarks, Naveed underscored the importance of inclusivity and the need for a shift in mindset regarding minority rights. He quoted a poignant verse, emphasizing that "a new day emerges from changing thoughts," and reiterated the commitment of the Pakistan Peoples Party to uplift minority communities.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah praised Naveed's leadership, stating, "In my 22-23 years of experience, I have not seen anyone manage the house as effectively despite facing strong political opposition. Well done, Deputy Speaker Anthony Naveed." 

Naveed expressed his gratitude to the leadership for the opportunity and felt honored by the kind words of appreciation from the Chief Minister. "A heartfelt thanks to my colleagues as well — your passion, support, and teamwork have been invaluable," he added.

Naveed's address resonated with the assembly members, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for proactive measures to support and empower minority groups in Sindh. His call for action serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and representation in Pakistan's political landscape.
