Thailand's National Security Council, during its meeting on 6 June 2025 at 10.00 hr, decided to establish an ad hoc committee to resolve the Thai-Cambodian situation. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, in his capacity as Chairman of the National Security Council, as well as other representatives from relevant agencies.
The meeting discussed preparations for various measures to protect national interests and communicate with the people, society, and the international community in order to create better understanding about the border situation. The ad hoc committee is responsible for monitoring the Thai-Cambodian border situation, coordinating related matters, and also offering suggestions on additional measures, if Cambodia expands the situation further.
The meeting also assigned the Royal Thai Army to prepare to cope with any changes from the emerging situation, with an emphasis on protecting Thailand’s sovereignty and maintaining cordial relations between the two countries for the maximum benefit of safeguarding national security. These operations will be carried out in line with dialogues under the Thai-Cambodian Joint Border Commission (JBC), to be held on 14 June 2025.
The meeting also assigned the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to monitor the dissemination of disinformation about the Thai-Cambodian situation, intentionally to instigate conflicts. Explanations must be provided immediately to create better understanding. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense were assigned to serve as core agencies in disseminating related information.
Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa emphasized unified operations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, aimed at creating better understanding among the people and preventing misunderstanding.
Concerning the Thai-Cambodian border situation, Mr. Maris stated that both sides would use existing bilateral mechanisms to resolve the issue. One of them is the JBC, which will be the main mechanism in the next JBC meeting between the two countries on 14 June. Discussions must first focus on the area of clash between Thai and Cambodian troops to ease the problem. Other issues will also be raised to reduce conflicts and avoid confrontation. He also said that Thailand and Cambodia have enjoyed good and cordial relations for a long time.
